Critical reading assignment
Goal: This activity is designed to help you learn the concept ‘grammar’ as used in linguistics and to distinguish the differences between mental, descriptive and prescriptive grammars (refer to File 1). By performing this activity, you will learn to explain the differences between the types of grammar and provide real-life examples.
Assignment:
You will write a short critical paper that summarizes and evaluates the author’s claim in the following reading: Milroy, L. Bad grammar is slovenly (a chapter – Myth 12 – from Bauer, L .& Trudgill, P. (Eds.) (1998). Language myths. London, England: Penguin Books).
Summarize the reading first, and then write your critical response to it. About half of your paper should be summary and about half should be response. In your response, discuss the author’s arguments and conclusions, whether you are convinced by them and why, and suggest additional/ alternative examples/ interpretations/ explanations. Provide supporting evidence from the reading and from your own experience as well.
You are not required to do any research or consult other sources of information for this assignment.
