What examples of orientation have you had as a new hire that have been particularly effective or ineffective? Explain.
Student response

I’ve been fortunate to have had experienced both an effective and ineffective orientation as a new hire. The most ineffective orientation happened when I was younger and was offered my first job at a motorcycle dealership. To start, my employment contract was based on a handshake and a verbal agreement of compensation. The owner held many different responsibilities at the time, so his approach to orientation was fast and to the point. This translated into about a 30-minute orientation; he said, here is your computer, here is your desk, restroom is down the hall and if you need anything let me know. This approach was ineffective because it left all of the important components of a proper orientation open to question.
On the contrary the most effective orientation that I’ve had has been with my current employer. First, I met with my recruiter and went over all of the employee handbook, which I was required to read prior to my first day. Second, I met with risk management to talk about where I will sit, the map of the facility, emergency procedures, and physical job requirements. Third, I met with benefits and went over my package. The end of the process was probably the one that helped to solidify the idea that this was the best decision. My manager sat down with me, we went over job requirements and KSAO’s, expectations, professional backgrounds, and then she took me around the entire agency to introduce me to all department managers. This approach was effective because it covered all of the components of a proper orientation and I had a full understanding of what was expected.
