Locate an example of a research study that uses correlation and regression techniques. Explain what it has allowed the researchers to accomplish and/or conclude in the study.
The research that I found was studying if the birth order can affect temperament, anxiety, and behavior in 5 to 7-year old children in a dental setting. The study looked at 200 children for two sessions each. The first session the parents were asked to complete a child’s behavior questionnaire. The second session identical to the first session was conducted but used the Franklscale for a child’s behavior, facial image scale for situational anxiety, and clinical anxiety rating scale. The correlation technique used was a scatter plot for the correlation between the clinical and situational anxiety of the children. The regression technique took the scatter plot further by figuring out the mean +- standard deviation and the p-value. The rating scales are used to help the researchers evaluate the results of the study conducted and to help clarify what the expectations are of each rating used. The baseline characteristics of the study population were compared using the Student t-test, χ2 test or Fisher’s exact test as appropriate. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the anxiety and behavior between the only children and children with siblings. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare variables between first, middle and last-born children. The correlation between the facial image scale and clinical anxiety rating scale was determined using the Spearman’s correlation coefficient. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 13.0. The study of the impact of a child’s rank among siblings in the dental setting has revealed that among the outcome measures there are very noticeable outlier: Middle and youngest children do worse than first-borns on nearly all measures, and only-child subjects are at increased risk of developing anxiety and negative behavior than children who had siblings in the family. There was a statistically significant correlation between the two anxiety measures comprising the clinical and the situational anxiety scales, during the treatment session. In our view, the result proves the robustness of anxiety measure tools in this study. In reference to the hypothesis of the study, the findings confirm that the first-borns exhibit less negative behavior than later-born children in the dental setting. This lends support to the vast majority of studies which have shown similar results in first-born children, since they tend to show lower levels of anxiety and better behavioral outcomes than the later-borns (Aminabadi, N., Sohrabi, A., Erfanparast, L., & et al., 2011). This study brings some light into a new perspective of children’s behavior at the dentist. I have children of my own, and I can advise that my oldest is twelve and she has less anxiety than my daughter who is six at the dentist.

Correlation and linear regression are the techniques which are commonly used to identify the relationship between two variables in research; the basic use of correlation analysis is to evaluate the measurements between two variables, whereas regression technique is used to check the relationship in the form of an equation. Both the techniques are commonly used in research procedures to evaluate the final results, similarly, a research was conducted to check the impact of word of mouth on the preference of the consumer, how positive and negative word of mouth impacts the buying behavior of the consumer. The predictors associated with the word of mouth were price, quality of food and service. Whereas, questionnaires were distributed among the 250 respondents, mostly the research participants were the students of the universities. The results obtained from the questionnaire further evaluated by applying correlation and linear regression, the results were formulated in the formula in such a way that word of mouth was considered as the independent variable and consumer preference were the dependent (Basri et al., 2016). The results of the questionnaire further evaluated with the help of correlation and regression analysis, finally it was concluded that word of mouth has an immense impact on the consumer preference, among the attributes of WOM, quality of services affected word of mouth the most.
