1. The first gap which I observe within the situational theory is the issue of group vs. individual leadership. The Situational Leadership II (SLII) model places heavy emphasis on situations or scenarios which occur between the leader and an individual follower. The SLII forgets to recognize prescriptive ways to lead the group through situations and scenarios. The Second gap which I observed while reviewing the literature was the need for clarification on how development (commitment & competency) are accurately measured. The extensive possible biases due to ambiguity risks the validity of SLII results. Thompson & Glaso (2015) investigated this shortcoming by applying more objective perspectives in the follower development evaluation process. The study found that including both leader and follower ratings in the developmental evaluation would render results which could be compared for quantitative and qualitative congruency. Further validating SLII.

I find both of these gaps to be worth noting for my own future leadership career. In order to perform leadership duties in education I must take into account the developmental level of the individuals (teachers in the classroom) while also minding how I can and should lead the whole (district). Furthermore, the education system is fraught with evaluative systems already. However, evaluations become slim at the district and administrative levels. Being that “commitment” and “competency” are such ambiguous terms, I would need to employ consistent evaluations upon myself and staff in order to maintain a clear understanding of my followers’ and my own goal orientations, commitment, and competency.

2. Northouse (2016) stated that when we use Situational Leadership Theory it leads us to using an adaptive leadership style that helps encourage team members and gets them involved. It helps us being able to weigh the many variables that are in place to help us choose the best style of leadership that we can provide for our team. As we notice now in many organizations instead of bosses thinking they are the only people in charge, we now use development styles to encourage our members and make sure we establish better rapport in the people. (Northouse, 2016).

We do not base one specific skill on leadership, but instead we help them to better management styles that fit into the organizations better that helps us become adaptable to other leaderships in the organizations. We want to be able to have better leaders that are able to fit with the people, because then everyone has a chance to lead in their own way.It is what helps build people to become better amongst themselves instead of thinking for themselves. For example at my work, the teachers, administration, and aides all work together with one another. No one is left behind, because if one person leads, we all get lost.

As Kolto-Rivera (2004) said, our leadership is better when we can fit life within the universe instead of leading on our own. We want to be able to limit the assumptions around the world to be able to lead around the undesirable so we are able to experience better relationships at work (Kolto-Rivera, 2004). When we are able to take time off from work and such, we are able to better ourselves to help out the team when we come back refreshed, this leads to teams or organizations becoming better instead of downhill. According to (Van De Ven, Ganco, & Hinings, 2013, p. 23) “leadership is a process whereby one individual influence a group of individuals to reach common goals”. This is the influence we want to be able to have on a group so we all are able to reach our common goals instead of doing it alone.

3. Examine the results of the “Adaptive Leadership Questionnaire” you completed, and revisit your picture of leadership presented in the first discussion question in the course. What do the results of the questionnaire tell you about your adaptive leadership style? Explain. How does adaptive leadership appear in your picture of leadership? Explain.

After completing the “Adaptive Leadership Questionnaire,” I felt that my answers were very satisfying that I was able to give and receive. Once I completed the chapter, I was able to think of my situation working as a Deaf Teacher in a Behavioral Program as well as the environment that I have been in for the last ten years. These last few months, have brought my situation to the forefront in front of the administration. I believe the adaptive leadership would apply well to my leadership qualities and that my colleagues would be able to back me up on that after being the one who stood up to the administration in how the program where I work has been treated these last few months during the COVID-19.

After reading the chapter by Northouse, I realized that the importance of adaptive leadership has a better understanding of having followers instead of an individual leading the whole organization, to lead at the top we need to also have leaders at the bottom of us as well. This is how organizations or businesses are able to succeed. As Brian Tracy said it best, “Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems.” (Inc, 2020). This is how we handle our situations and solutions at work everyday, we find solutions instead of sitting and discussing our problems, we find ways to solve them.
