  Adolescence    

Adolescence is a challenging time for students. With adolescence comes the necessity for autonomy and independence. Therefore, parenting style must evolve and adapt to accommodate this change. After reading the article “Parenting Styles in Adolescents (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.,” discuss the following questions:

• What strategies can parents of adolescent children use to prevent or end troublesome behavior and maintain a positive family environment?
• Do family structure, dynamics, and culture play a role in maintaining such an environment?

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two by providing feedback, additional strategies parents can use to prevent or end troublesome behavior, or any other guidance that will extend your classmates’ thinking.

Though two replies is the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and learning you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have posted for you. Remember, continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.

  Grandparents    

According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), across the United States more than 5.8 million children are living in their grandparents’ homes. When parents are not able to care for their children, the grandparents may take over parenting responsibilities. After watching the video, review the AARP fact sheet for your state (you will need to locate your state on the dropdown menu on the right side of the AARP website (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.). Then, using the video, your state’s fact sheet, and your course text, address the following:

• Summarize the information on your state’s fact sheet.
• Explain the impact this type of situation may have on family relationships and the development of the child.
• Discuss your role in supporting families where the grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Use one additional scholary source to support your discussion.
