After reviewing the video, and reading through the transcript, I felt authenticity held the most value. Not honesty, or being forthright with your students, but being authentic to them and their education in the manner you do things, including the behind the scenes they may not see. Often times there may be the hard truths for some students, or realities of the “real world” they havent experienced yet. We have to prepare them for those. I hesitate to use the term “tough love”, but it is an apt metaphor. Whether we’re looked at as that really nice guy that teaches Art 101, or that [email protected]# that teaches Art 101, we must be authentic in our approach to teaching and assessing those students. There will be opinions and ideas they may not want to hear, as insturctors we must not only be effective in assessing student perfomance, and using that data collected to shape our reactions and our teaching methodologies, but we must keep our eyes on the prize so to speak, though authentic and applicable actions and information. Otherwise we, and our students, are simply going through the motions.

The most important concept I learned while watching the multimedia piece titled Research and Relevance to the Field, is the ability to use peer-reviewed research studies to learn new ways to utilize self-efficacy during feedback and teaching that you are liking praise to real student progress and that is real and measureable (Capella University, 2019).
Self-efficacy is commonly defined as the belief in one’s capabilities to achieve a goal or an outcome. Students with a strong sense of efficacy are more likely to challenge themselves with difficult tasks and be intrinsically motivated. These students will put forth a high degree of effort in order to meet their commitments, and attribute failure to things which are in their control, rather than blaming external factors. Self-efficacious students also recover quickly from setbacks, and ultimately are likely to achieve their personal goals. Students with low self-efficacy, on the other hand, believe they cannot be successful and thus are less likely to make a concerted, extended effort and may consider challenging tasks as threats that are to be avoided. Thus, students with poor self-efficacy have low aspirations which may result in disappointing academic performances becoming part of a self-fulfilling feedback cycle (Margolis and McCabe, 2006).

One strategy suggested through our online Capella resources, is to make sure that your journal or article has been peer reviewed. Peer reviewed articles are the articles that have been studied, read, and gone through considerable evaluation before being published. As mentioned in the resource, peer-reviewed articles are considered the “gold standard” in academic publishing. (n.d., p. 1) These are so important in the study of education, because they have been reviewed and studied by a large number of experts in the field. These experts can ensure the quality of the research done, as well as, provide the reader with the comfort of knowing that this article is in fact scholarly. Educators can then use these peer reviewed articles to conduct research in their own classrooms.

There are many strategies for determining whether a research report is relevant and useful to professional practice. First you must use a good search engine. The Capella library has a wealth of information pertaining to different topics, but one can also google a topic and find relevant articles or material. Knowing what keywords to use is also an important strategy. You don’t want your searches to be to narrow or too broad, as this can either give you too much material or limit the amount of material that is found. The date that the material was published will also assist in making sure it is relevant and useful. You want to stick with material that was published within the last 5 years to make sure it is current. It is also a good idea to find peer reviewed articles or ones that are written by respected and well known authors, this helps to ensure the material is credible.

When it comes to encouraging my audience to tune in and listen to what I am saying, I believe sincerity, politeness and frankness plays a big part of it. Of course, it will be better if you are intuitive about others people feeling and you must have the confidence to reach out to people. Sincerity is the most basic traits you need. By being sincere it means by listening to them without making any judgement. People can feel whether you are sincere or not. It’s a important value, one must keep to heart. You must not break your confidence when you promise not to. Trust is important. Once it broken, it difficult to mend. One must always be polite(although I doubt everyone is). In the face of unreasonable customer, one must still be polite. After all, as the saying goes, the customer is always right. However, I must warn you not to be too extreme or it will only make you look pretentious which goes against the first law. Being a polite person will make you a bearable companion.

Meetings-Signs of not listening in meetings may be shift in body movements, looking down at their phones, writing or scribbling on paper, looking around the room, or conversating with other peers. Ways to help your peers listen would be to involve them in activities, talk in a tone in which you are lively, and move around being an open communicator.
Group Communication- Public speakers can show they are listening by giving eye contact to the people that are in the group, if it is a project they can chime in with the other members and create ideas withb one another. It is important to let everyone feel like they are being heard so they can give there one hundred percent when you come together, and it’s a form of respect and courtesy.
Public Speaking-Cues that an audience is listening is that if they give eye contact, if they engage with you about the topic you are talking about, you can encourage the audience to tune in by giving visual aids and asking questions. Visual aids provides the peers with information they can see in real time aiding in the visualization of data.

Wildfires are unplanned fires that begin in nature, are powerful, are around 90% of them are started by humans. These wildfires not only have the ability to burn everything in its path to ashes, the smoke it creates is a significant issue that potentially negatively impacts our health. Wildfire smoke contains air pollutants such as particulate matter and carbon monoxide. There was a study conducted in 2015 that showed a significant increase in emergency room visits during a wildfire; all cerebrovascular incidents and respiratory conditions were associated with the smoky conditions from the wildfire (AMA, 2018). Increased respiratory distress can lead to heart attacks and blood clots. Also, wildfires can destroy animal habitats and force unnatural competition leading to lower population numbers and even extinction.
Wildfires are an annual occurrence; 2018 recorded over 41,000 fires (III, 2019). There are specific forest firefighters that battle these blazes. Aerial support is also used as well as controlled burns to reduce wildfire spread.

An emerging environmental health issue that keeps increasing day by day would be outdoor air pollution. Due to the fuels from our transportation system, heating systems, and cooking it increases the air pollution that we breathe in when outdoors. These increase every day and in large quantities due to the population especially in cities as opposed to rural areas in the country. The chemical pollutants that are found in the air raise a concern regarding the human body’s respiratory system. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution kills one in eight people on a global scale and ninety-two percent of the population habitats in areas that exceed the limits set by the organization (WHO, 2017). One countermeasure to decreasing air pollution is electric cars and ovens that don’t burn off the fuel that pollutes the air. This is an ongoing issue and the solution to air pollution is still in progress. Unfortunately, this is an issue that cannot be resolved overnight and will take some long-term planning to correct or adapt to.
