  • Explain at least five differences between popular and scholarly sources used in research.

There several differences between popular and scholarly resources. Scholarly resources are written by professionals in that specific topic. The information is presented by professionals who are looking for either critique by peers, or approval from others in their field. In these sources, generally there are a wide range of scholarly terms that are written at an advanced level. It is written for members of the writer’s peer group to understand. Scholarly articles also do not have many pictures, but the photos that are presented are graphs with information. While in contrast popular sources are written for the general public to understand. They are also focused on popular topics, and generally do not come with a reference page.

  • Locate and summarize one peer-reviewed, scholarly source from the Ashford University Library and one popular source that pertain to your Final Argumentative Essay topic. In your summary of each article, comment on the following: biases, reliability, strengths, and limitations.

The first article that I read was an article about the airport security in Prague. They plan on placing new technology inside of their airport to increase their security. The source seems to be reliable because a lot of the resources inside of the bibliography comes from credible websites and authors. There are not many signs of bias, 1st person speech, or anything that would turn this from an informative to a persuasive type of writing.

Unlike the peer reviewed article, I saw several ques for biases and the reliability of the resources was low. There were no resources and I took this article from a newspaper. This article was published post 911 after a shooter laid open fire in an airport, and how there were no security measures that were made. This article seems to be bias because it only presents one side of the argument, it issues a lot of blame on the airport and its lack of security.

  • From the sources you summarized, list and explain at least five visual cues from the peer-reviewed, scholarly source that were not evident in the popular source.

When looking at the peer reviewed sources, there are several differences that I saw that were different from the popular one. In peer reviewed sources there are bold titles that divide each section of the work. There is the abstract, which is the summary, the introduction, methods and materials, results, discussions, and bibliographies. Which is how many professional and peer reviewed sources are formatted, because they present information or an experiment that needs to be reviewed.

There are many differences between scholarly and Non- Scholarly/ Popular sources discussed in the video. First popular sources are written with common vocabulary , where Scholarly journals are written with technical language. Secondly Scholarly sources present original research and popular sources present more general interest pieces. Third, Popular sources may have photos and advertisements and a scholarly source will have non of those but may include charts and graphs. Next, a popular source is reviewed by and editor and a scholarly source is reviewed by peers in order to ensure quality control.. Finally Popular sources do not have a bibliography and scholarly sources do.

The two article I picked are “Screening and ‘Frisk Searches’ as Part of Airport Security: Matters of Choice?: The Need for ‘Checks and Balances’ in Aviation Security Legislation” for my scholarly article and “ The Price of Security for my Popular source. The scholarly article takes a look at the legal aspects of airport security and how all of our rights are affected. The popular sources takes a look at how we are individually affected and all effected as a whole of a society.

Between the two articles there are some clear cut differences : the popular article has pictures for effect and advertisements. The scholarly article is more focused and well written. No one is cited in the bibliography of the Times article. And the scholarly article was reviewed by other experts in the legal field.
