Shifting Perspectives

  Essay must be in MLA format (1 inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, correct header, double spaced); no outside sources required .
 
Many times throughout our lives, being exposed to a new term, idea, book, person, or group will change the way that we see the world. For your first essay in the course, I would like you to reflect on a time when your perspective changed about the world. This will be a personal narrative that explores what new information or event changed your mind, and how you were impacted. Please explain what your original attitude or perspective was in order for the reader to understand the shift that happened. Use Chimamanda Adichie’s TED talk and Alice Lesperance’s article as models of this type of narrative. If you’d like, you can quote or reference their ideas in your essay.
Your essay should include a clear thesis/ purpose statement, an introduction, and a conclusion that reflects on your experience. Remember that I don’t know you very well, so be sure to include enough background for the reader to understand the context of your story.
You do not need to cite any outside sources, so I expect you to use personal experience and description. You will be assessed based on your ability to construct an essay with clear academic structure and the ability to clearly explain your experience.
