US REPS

Part 1: List these elected officials who represent you: US Senators, US Representative, CA Assemblyperson, CA Senator, City Councilperson or County Supervisor. Name the person, the district number if applicable, and their party. Use internet tools from official sites to determine these officials based on your home address.

Part 2: Imagine that you’ve applied for an internship with your US Congress Representative, but there are many other people competing for the position. In order to determine the best person for the job, the Representative wants to determine how much each potential intern knows about the representative’s policy positions and the U.S. electoral system in general.

Write a 1000 word “position” paper in APA format. Discuss your knowledge about the Representative, his/her policy positions, the district’s electorate, campaigns, and political parties. Your paper must include the following:

A description of the Representative’s background and his/her district’s designated number, location, and basic demographics
The purpose and functions of political parties in the United States and then name the party to which your Representative belongs
Ways you suggest citizens/constituents can participate more in his/her campaign and election process and how you would promote this.
Current policy positions held by the representative on two public policy issues
Explain in one paragraph the presidential general election campaign process, and the important factors and events that influence it
The role the media (TV, radio, internet, social media) play in modern political campaigns and how your Representative can or does use them
The role and influence of money in the modern political campaign and how your Representative raises funds

Use the representative’s website and independent sources to support your paper.

Include citations for all unoriginal ideas, facts, or definitions in an APA-formatted reference list that should include at least three academically acceptable references in addition to the text book..

Be prepared to deliver in-class a maximum five minute summary of your paper.
