discussion

The point of this discussion is to demonstrate an understanding of strategies that can help you stay focused while reading or while attending class. We have all been distracted while trying to study or take notes during a lecture, so knowing a few strategies to help you pay attention will also help you recognize the important concepts an instructor wants you to know. 1- First post: Think about a past experience in school or at work when you needed to pay attention even though there were a lot of distractions. This could be during a class, a work training, or while reading a textbook or manual. Your post should be between seven (7) and fifteen (15) sentences long. In your post you should describe the following:          A- What you did, if anything, to overcome the distractions         B- How successful you were in the class or training        C- Which strategies from the two Essential College Skills Foundations that you read for this discussion would have helped you be more successful 2- Second and third posts: Pick two (2) of your classmates’ posts and describe whether or not the strategies they chose would have helped in their situation. Include additional or alternative strategies from the Essential College Skills Foundations that would have helped them succeed. These two posts should be between five (5) and twelve (12) sentences long.   one of my classmate:I used to be horrible at taking notes. When I went back to review them, I couldn’t even read it. But since I have started college, I make it a point to take good notes. I put headings, subheadings, and points about the subject. If I think something is really important I will put an asterisk next to it. I take a lot of notes when I read, if I see it on paper, it helps me understand it better. I also highlight what I think is an important point. We live with our daughter, son-in-law, and three of our grandchildren, so there are always a lot of distractions. I used to wait until they went to bed to work on my homework, but I found that I was rushed to get the assignments done, and made more mistakes. Now I get up earlier in the morning so I can get it done while they are in school. I don’t mind some noise, my husband is usually playing his PlayStation 4, but I can usually tune it out. Unfortunately, I sometimes tune him out as well. second of my classmate:I have actually taken a lot of pride in my note-taking skills. For as long as I can remember, I have always been very dedicated to this piece. I have a teacher in Junior High that gave one background story of her own about how it helped her become a better test taker & I had a problem with freezing up before I took tests, so I gave it shot. I tend to take notes that appear to be a mini-version of whatever material I am taking notes on. My High School notebooks were always overflowing. My college notes look the same, especially from this course. 😀 I don’t want to miss important information, so I also highlight information as I read in my textbooks. If we are watching a 15 minute video, I will still take notes the whole time. It has really helped me along the way and it is one of my favorite things to do. It helps me understand the material I am reading also. I liked the strategies and suggestions offered throughout the Unit Foundations. The “SQRRR” is one I have never tried. Well maybe in pieces, but never all 5 steps. This is one I will probably utilize going forward to see how it works for me in conjunction with what I already use for reading comprehension. third of my classmate: Taking notes it’s one of the most important way to learn. It’s make me more focused on the subject especially if I miss understand something. Sometimes I reread the book or any paragraph trying to find what exactly I need to highlight so I can understand better. there is a style I use to do, I mark a fact in the paragraph and then I use a different marker to highlight all words related to this fact so I can make a question and an answer. a lot of times I Mark the right questions and couple times I see the same question that I made in the exam. the writer can chose 2 of this three
