Here are some more examples of musical forms, as mentioned in my previous post on Time Signatures or Meter Signatures:
A polka is a genre of lively folk dance music popular in many European countries and the Americas. Folk artists perform local varieties of the dance known for its short half steps. Polkas can also be heard in light classical music.
A march is often performed by a military or school band, and has a strong, regular rhythm. Marches are written for a variety of occasions and can be either celebratory or somber in mood. American composer John Philip Sousa is considered to be “The March King” because of his many famous and popular marches.
A waltz can be a ballroom dance or a folk dance. It is always performed in 3/4 time, and gives the meter its name, “waltz tempo.” The dance is performed with the couple in closed position. There are different styles of waltzes, depending on the region from which they originated.
A minuet, or menuet (French), or minuetto (Italian) is a social dance of French origin using short steps and performed by two people in 3/4 time. The term also refers to the musical form when not accompanying a dance, using the same meter and rhythm, but played faster. This developed into a longer form, the minuet and trio.
A jig is a folk dance that originated in England in the 16th century. The term is used to describe both the dance and its accompanying tune, and is most often associated with Irish dance and Scottish country-dance.
A tarantella is an Italian couple folk dance with a fast, upbeat tempo. It is often accompanied by tambourines, and is a widely recognized form of traditional Italian music.
A barcarolle is a folk song associated with the Venetian gondolier or boatman that propels a gondola, or flat-bottomed rowing boat, and is characterized by the rhythm of his stroke.
