Final Paper/Paper 3: Ways of Seeing: Image Trouble and Problems with Representation
Final Paper Due (PDF email attachment) to gmail address: Monday 6th July
(Absolutely No Late Papers Can Be Accepted!!)
This paper is worth 20 points.
Description:
We have looked at, read about, and discussed the development of photography and photographic images as art and as a form of representation. We have also talked about the strengths and weaknesses of these images in representing truth or reality, in telling us something about history, in enabling escape, in facilitating the sharing of ideas and/or feelings, in prompting questioning, in challenging our assumptions, and in pushing us to look more closely at while enabling us to see the world from perspectives other than our own. We have asked whether these images – photographs — are art and whether or not and how this question matters.
We have looked at the impact this art or technology –can it be both? – has had on our world and concluded its very development suggests man’s need (and woman’s, too!) to share his thinking and to make sense or meaning of his world through the creation of and consumption of these images.
Identify two issues or “problems” this art/technology has created or raised in our way of “seeing”, understanding or living in and operating in our world.Discuss and describe the two issues or “problems” and the role of photographs or photography in them and consider what two of our readings or writers would say about this issue or “problem”. Be sure to indicate the significance of the two issues or concerns or problems you raise and why we should care about them.
