It is important to be familiar with counseling skills, interventions, and techniques that can be used with culturally diverse clients. Mental health professionals are increasingly called to a standard of accountability in their work, which necessitates using evidence-based skills. Thus, they should incorporate skills and interventions that have been subjected to empirical research that supports their effectiveness and use with clients.

There are a number of ways in which mental health professionals can develop their skills (intervention strategies and techniques) in working with culturally diverse clients. However, this first implies an underlying ability to read and understand scholarly research and to critique that research.
