 As Hudson (2011) explains, an exigent circumstance is a Fourth Amendment exception allowing law enforcement personnel to gain certain information or perform particular tasks in emergency-like situations. The Fourth Amendment protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures, however there are some situations when law enforcement officials cannot wait for a warrant and action must be taken immediately to prevent imminent danger to other persons or themselves, preserve evidence, or prevent escape (Hudson, 2011). For example, if a law enforcement officer were conducting interviews in a neighborhood due to a nearby shooting and in one house see a time bomb set to explode in less than an hour, that officer can then go in that person’s house to secure such explosive and take appropriate actions to protect others. For Boarding Officers in the US Coast Guard, if during a maritime pursuit the offender disembarks at a nearby marina and the officers lose sight of the individual the pursuit is technically from over by the CG. However, if the officers hear gunfire in a house next door to the marina the officers may go into that house under that exigent circumstance to protect others.
