Students in public postsecondary education have the rights to organize, to be recognized, and to use campus resources and services provided to campus groups (Kaplin & Lee, 2009). However, the execution of these rights tends to undergo varying degrees of disparity between the organization’s rights and the institution’s authority.
Based upon what you learned in this module and through additional research, analyze the balance between a student’s rights and an institution’s authority. Offer your opinion on what you think the proper balance should be between student organizations and institutions, and why. Be sure to offer suggestions for how the balance could be improved. Thus, explain the implications an imbalance might have on the protection of students’ associational rights and campus compliance and accountability.
