“Communicating and Negotiating in Cross-Cultural Communitie

Imagine that your boss has just asked you to replace the plant manager of a medium-sized facility with 120 employees in South America. Propose one (1) theory of work motivation that you would use to motivate the employees of the plant in question in order to meet the goals of the company in that country. Provide a rationale for your response.

Imagine that you are taking a trip to visit a potential customer located in the selected country for three (3) days. For the first day, the president and executives of the company have asked to meet during the day to show you the plant and take you out for dinner and entertainment at night. You will be in meetings the first two (2) days. Your company will give you a corporate credit card and expect you to take the potential clients out on the third day for socializing. From the e-Activity, outline a seven (7)-point strategy for negotiating the business for your company while you socialize with the executives of the plant. Provide a rationale for your response.Top of Form

As a manager of a medium sized facility in South America it’s important that in order to achieve success managers must choose incentives such as pay, promotion and recognition in order to motivate their employees.  The work motivation theory is to show how basic processes will apply in the work environment.  In most work setting employees want security, affiliation, esteem, physiological and self-actualization best known as the hierarchy of needs theory.  As a manager I would also select the hierarchy needs theory.  This theory allows for growth, relatedness and existence needs.

In multicultural companies like China and Japan want to succeed with cross cultural communications.  Being successful in business opportunities will depend on international negotiations and how well they can communicate.  Negotiators will need to be able to understand the written and the oral languages.  Not being able to communicate can bring negative consequences to include misinterpreting gestures for a manager.   In Japan it is a known fact that a) silence is golden (more is less), b) age equals seniority (older executives receive more respect), c) privacy is valued (privacy is important), d) what you don’t know can hurt you (gift exchange is valuable to those in the business world), e) honor the official dress code (be conservative), f) the small stuff matters (small details and politeness) and g) manners speak loudly (use the other end of chopsticks to pick up food and never use the other side you use to eat).  In international negotiations they tend to be more complex than in domestic negotiations.  Strategy requires preparation, planning, the exchange of information and focus on preparation.
