Media literacy is an up and coming trend that has begun to evolve in the elementary school curriculum. Media literacy challenges the current curriculum by getting students involved with research and activating their critical and analytical skill set. Individuals who have media literacy know the content of media and the structure of the related services, make informed choices and evaluate all the opportunities provided by new communication technologies (Selanik-Ay & Duban, 2018).

Two ways I can incorporate Media Literacy into the 5th grade Reading curriculum are:

  1. Having students to compare and contrast media sources. For example, I would give students a trending topic and have them evaluate the comparisons and differences of how the newspaper or article ran the story.
  2. Students would be allowed to create their media based on novels we are reading in class at the time. Students will be instructed to create a mini billboard advertisement for the novel.

In chapter 14, the skill set I chose that could effectively integrate into the curriculum is reasoning.

Reasoning can help students to access the skill set of critical thinking. Reasoning is vital in Reading especially when it comes to evaluating what is happening in a story. I would have students activate reasoning when reading novels in the classroom. Reasoning will create dialogue on the sequence of events in books and questioning why certain aspects of the story were written a certain way.

In chapter 15, the method I would integrate is Differentiate Instruction.

Differentiate Instruction gives the student the opportunity to explore multiple aspects of learning without being restricted to one method. This type of instruction allows teachers to personalize learning based on the culture of their classroom (Glatthorn, 2019).

Utilizing differentiate instruction, I would have students to imagine if they were a character in the story and allow them to create their storyline on how they would change the plot in the story.
