Introduction
As a counselor, you will be faced with clients who have addiction issues. Often your clients will initially present one problem to you and during the course of treatment, you will uncover addiction issues. In other cases, clients will come to you directly for help in overcoming an addiction. It is important to understand how to work with clients struggling with an addiction.
Drug treatments become increasingly acceptable to clients, parents, and the counseling profession as a form of treatment. As a result, it is increasingly important that counselors understand how and why they are used. It is also important to understand how the counselor can work with the client and medical professionals to monitor their use. In this module, we will explore this, as well as discuss our own beliefs regarding the use of medication.
We, once again, visit the case of Maria. Maria has now been in treatment with you for several months. During the course of treatment, she has become increasingly concerned about her ability to support her unborn child in the future. She has stated she would like to explore her career options. Consider how you would work with Maria in this case.
Review the current state of Maria’s case in the introduction to this module. In a two to three page paper choose one theory of career development and apply it to Maria’s case by describing how you would use this theory to counsel Maria in her decision making related to her career plans. Evaluate the role you will take as a career counselor in using this theory. A minimum of two sources including the textbook is required.
