Paper 11 Documented Essay—4 to 8 pages Paper 10 Process Journal
The Documented Essay will give you an opportunity to develop your own solutions to a problem you have discovered as you read about your topic. You will describe a problem, make a proposal for correcting the problem (your thesis), explain why some people may disagree with your plan, and finally justify and explain your plan. You MAY use the topic you choose for the Directed Discussion and paper.

You MAY also use a topic you find of more interest. In choosing a topic, remember that you must connect it to at least one of the readings in The Norton Sampler.
5 to 8 sources as follows—
1-2 readings from our book (required)
1-2 scholarly sources (required)
1-2 books no older than 10 years
Personal surveys or interviews
Reputable magazines, newspapers, TV or movies
This paper also requires a documented visit to either the writing tutor in Peekskill or the Academic Writing Center on campus. This will count for 5% of the grade on Paper 11 and 15% of the grade on Paper 10.
Format–No cover page—personal information will go on the top left hand corner of page 1
*Title to reflect your thesis—it is centered about 2 ½ inches from the top of the page—no quotation  marks, no underline, no bold print
*Introduction—attention getter and thesis. The thesis should include these three points: problem,  solution, reason the solution will work
*Opposition and Rebuttal–You will need at least two points.  Opposition might be–
a reason people might say they do not see a problem where you do
a reason people might not agree with your solution
a reason people might see another solution as preferable
In the rebuttal, you will show the reasons these opposition positions are wrong or that your idea is better.
*Argument–You will expand your points and explain why/how your solution will work. You need at least two important points—usually presented as least to most important.  DO NOT rebut (argue against) your own points.
*Conclusion
*Works Cited (separate sheet—not part of your page count) Must use MLA 8th edition
