Write a four to five (4-7) page paper in which you FIRST read the following:American pop culture is fascinated with stories about female captivity. Movies, books, television shows and more, are full of kidnappings, rapes, torturing, mental and emotional abuse as well as murders of girls and women. Many of those narratives are interpreted as “tales of initiation”: stories in all cultures that describe in fictional ways, the necessary transition all humans must make from child to adult by acquiring the awareness of evil in the world. The Christian story of the Garden of Eden is one well-known example. Adam and Eve are in paradise together. Eve takesan apple from a serpent and eats it. This act symbolically shows the initiation because she has eaten an apple from the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” This experience is called the “fall from grace” or just “the fall.” It means no longer seeing a perfect world; it means looking at the world as it truly is – a combination of goodness andevil. If we never experience “the fall” we are stunted in our development into mature adult humans. However, that “fall” is often fraught with anxieties, risks, and fears that are part of normal adolescence. The centerpiece of this research project and argument, is the short story by Joyce Carol Oates, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” – an initiation tale. But as your text explains, “a literary text reflects and responds to specific cultural contexts. Such is the case with this story” (1015). So along with reading the fictional short story by Oates and viewing the film Smooth Talk, (its film adaptation), you will also be reading articles and essays about real life captivity experiences. So “controversy” in this argument will take the form of your interpretation of a literary work: “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”/Smooth Talk. Interpretations, like any subject with various opinions, are only as strong as their evidence. Constructing a persuasive literary argument then, is very similar to writing an argument on any controversial issue. The difference lies in the manner in which you develop ideas. One kind of argument examines facts and opinions; the other kind of argument (literary), interprets those facts and opinions about a fictional work of literature.ADDITIONAL
