How does Social Media impact Mental Health
In the generation we are living in, on an everyday basis people are using social media and have become addicted to social media. This has brought up the topic on whether or not social media has an impact on people’s mental health. Some feel that social media platforms cannot affect one’s mental health while others feel social media has had an effect on how people respond mentally. My position is that I agree and believe social media has a certain implication that it attaches in human mental health. Some mental health disorders people have developed have mainly sourced from what people see and hear.
Social media user’s mental health is affected negatively first through the degradation of their self esteem. Almost all social media platforms display lives of other people to the public as if it is perfect. People rarely expose their faults. People upload posts, pictures, videos, and memes etc., on these platforms. I belive that it mentally robs people by leading them to think almost everyone in the world are  doing better than them. This causes people to end up thinking they are not performing well in life and that itself develops a personal envy toward themselves. This is a critical point when speaking on one’s mental health. It can cause people to live beyond their means which would in turn cause someone to go into an exceptional amount of debt which also leads to depression ; or they develop hatred towards their perceived poor performance  and economic performance. A person who has developed a negative opinion towards themselves cannot in any way accept themselves. They are subjected to depression and possibly other  mental health disorders (Wilcox, Kathy, and James, 278-286).
Almost everyone has fallen victim to the trap of social media addiction . But how it affects someone mentally goes hand in hand on how one accepts themselves and their own life. They do not understand their lives are not meant to be the same as other people. I feel that it is also very important to remember that everything is not as it seems. People show you what they want you to know but you never know what is going on behind closed doors. When one is not strong enough to accept that they are perfect being themselves, they develop that notion that they must conform. When one cannot afford these conformities, they become mentally disturbed over such petty issues. These conformities are evident via social media;  for instance there are many  people we know personally and experience on a daily basis. They may portray a different life on social media than from the life we personally know them to live. Social media arouses people memories and give people a false sense of hope on what life should be and look like.
Social media can affect  mental health in  positive and negative ways . Some studies have shown that online connections with small groups of people can indeed be beneficial to teens, while other research points to a rise in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.  Another positive aspect of social media is that it also makes socializing easy and immediate for those young adults who struggle with social skills, social anxiety, or who don’t have easy access to face-to-face socializing with other teens might benefit from connecting with others through social media. Also, within marginalized groups including the young adults apart of the LGBTQ community ; young adults who struggle with mental health issues can find support and friendship through use of social media. When connected with small groups of supportive young adults via social media, those connections can be the difference between living in isolation and finding support.
People spend a grand amount of time on social media. And many other even spend countless nights surfing and associating with others globally in social media. This continued addiction makes a person use social media for hours on end and in turn affects their mental health from what they see (Cain, Natalie and Michael, pp. 735-742).
The sober brain is the basis on which people used to determine a well functioning person’s mental health. However, the time which can stay focused on an activity can be used to identify and define the mental health of a person. With social media, people have become and used it, and frequently keeps tracking what is happening in this platform. Many are subjected to the suspicion of what has happened without their knowledge of these platforms, and they fail most of the activities that they are required to attend physically and mentally. The span at which one can stay focused on daily serious routine role is thus reduced, and now, one’s mental health is programmed to focus more on social media that on what they require moving and make their lives better. A person might be responding consciously to life events, and there mental concentration may be deteriorated. His among others, is how the deterioration of mental health is manifested.
Research has explained the correlation between anxiety and people’s mental health (Alkis, Yunus, Zafer Kadirhan, and Mustafa, pp. 296-303).Some events that have been happening in social media have emerged suicide risks as social media become more popular and rampantly spreading among humanity (De Choudhury). Somethings that happen on social media might harm your dignity for life, corrupt you perceive life and eventually ends thinking other lifestyles are not worth living. This happens most commonly when a person does not conform to social media multitude. If a person is not strong enough, their decision making becomes dictated by social media lives and thus suicide desires.
In closing, social media has a direct impact on people’s mental health because Social media can build you, and at the same time, harm you. People portray happy lives via social media, which in turn will leave someone who may not have that same life that they also desire hurt and struggling with their demons. Therefore, false perception in social media aligns one’s thinking particularly that they are not accepted which affect their mental health.
