Your final project will be a 4-5 page essay. Each student will choose a poet and analyze 2-3 poems by that poet. The final essay will be comprised of 1-2 pages of biographical information that situates the poet in the poetry world, and 2-3 pages discussing specific elements of craft utilized by the poet and how these elements effects what the poet is attempting to communicate with their work. For example: a poet might use white space differently from other poets you’ve read. Discuss this and give textual examples to support your claims. For example: a poet might use mixed diction registers within single poems throughout the collection. Discuss this and give textual examples to support your claims. It is also perfectly acceptable to discuss common themes in the poet’s work. Overall, the aim of this assignment is to learn about language and rhetorical technique, gain a deeper understanding of a text, understand how writers craft their work, and to simply, become a more informed reader of poetry. In addition, while researching your chosen poets you will be able to more clearly identify what genre, aesthetic or approach most appeals to you. Please note: 2-3 outside sources ARE required for this assignment.
