1.Choose one court case that has influenced least restrictive environment issues for children with disabilities. Why is this case significant? What impact has it made in public education? What impact has it made in your classroom?

2. Explain the continuum of placement alternatives. What are the implications of keeping children with special needs in the classroom with children that are without disabilities? Discuss the pros and cons.

3. How does IDEA define an Individual Education Program (IEP)? How has this legislation changed IEP development in schools? Experientially, how useful are IEPs and how closely are they followed by teachers and support staff? Give examples in your discussion.

4. Who should be included in an IEP meeting? Why? What role does each participant play in an IEP meeting?

5. What is the definition of adequate progress according to the courts? How does your district address adequate progress? Compare and contrast how your district addresses adequate progress and how the courts have defined adequate progress.

6. How does the progression from grade to grade indicate adequate progress, based on the court’s definition?

7. What due process rights are afforded to parents according to IDEA? What other due process rights are guaranteed to parents by the courts? How are parental rights addressed in your school district?

8. Discuss procedural safeguards and how they are used in the district with which you are most familiar. How might you change the procedures to make them more effective?

9. Major changes to the disciplinary regulations came with the reauthorization of IDEA in 2004. Discuss what the changes were. How does this change or reinforce earlier court decisions?

10. Discuss some of the major concerns involving disciplinary issues for special education teachers. How are the disciplinary techniques used for children with special needs different from the techniques used in the typical classroom?

11. What are the differences between due process and dispute resolution hearings? Give examples of how these types of hearings would be used in a school district.
