Researchers have found a complex set of physical, social, environmental and psychological factors influence what a person eats. Identify at least two examples for each of the three categories listed below known to influence a person’s dietary habits/foods choices. Once an example is identified, then provide/describe a real or hypothetical reason or situation to demonstrate how that factor specifically influences a person’s dietary intake. Refer to p. 199 and Box 9.1 in the text for further insights.

Oral nutrition/protein supplements in the form of beverages or “shakes” for patients needing additional or special nutrition have become a NORMAL part of our culture.  How has this occurred?  Aging brings many gradual changes to a person: social, physical, cognitive, metabolic/disease related and many more.  Often, the family tries to offer oral nutrition/protein supplements as a means to help their aging loved one consume adequate nutrition.  It can be a quite complex and emotional experience when caring for an aging loved one.   It is important to know what some of the common oral nutrition supplements provide so educated and realistic nutrition intake recommendations can be made.

• Research common brand name and store brand oral nutrition supplements/ meal replacement beverages intended for older adults. Are there any health claims made on the box or bottle?
• Evaluate the amounts of each nutrient present in at least 2 (or more) kinds of meal replacement or supplement drinks.
• Are some important nutrients not included in the supplement? Are the amounts of any nutrients excessive?
• What types of considerations need to be made before encouraging an elderly person to consume these supplemental nutrition drinks?  Think physical, psychological and consider the true benefits received.
