This assignment will analyze and identify elements of project management within “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. The student is to read the Sun Tzu treatise thoroughly looking to identify sections that can be identified as relating to the project management process groups as discussed on page 10 of Kloppenborg (2019). The student will then write an analysis discussing these findings. The student should have seven sections to their paper. These sections are as follows:
Introduction (brief overview of your paper)
Initiating the Project
Planning the Project
Executing the Project
Monitoring & Controlling the Project
Closing the Project
Conclusion (brief wrap-up of your essay)
For each of the PM process group sections each student will briefly discuss what each process group entails (Use Kloppenborg and Pinto as sources). The student will then identify a passage from The Art of War which would provide an example of each of these project groups and then discuss how this passage demonstrates the process group.
For example, if we were discussing Budgeting (instead of a process group), you would:
1) briefly discuss how budgeting is the maximization of monetary resources within the scope of a project
2) quote Sun Tzu – “In the operations of war, where there are in the field a thousand swift chariots, as many heavy chariots, and a hundred thousand mail-clad soldiers, with provisions enough to carry them a thousand li, the expenditure at home and at the front, including entertainment of guests, small items such as glue and paint, and sums spent on chariots and armor, will reach the total of a thousand ounces of silver per day. Such is the cost of raising an army of 100,000 men” (If you use a long quote be sure to single space that quote)
3) discuss how this discussion of raising an army of 100,000 men relates to budgeting.
This paper should be a minimum of three (3) full pages of text. This means that your paper should spill over onto a fourth page. Please list your references and cite within the text of your paper.
For this paper the Art of War Treatise can be referenced as such: Giles, L. (1911). Sun Tzu’s Art of War. London: Luzac and Company.
