Innovation Essay
Objectives
The purpose of this essay is to provide an opportunity to research an innovation of your own choice in any of the topics that we have explored through Week 6 of this session.
Here are some ideas (do not consider this list to be exhaustive).
1. What are some modern techniques being used to determine the age of the Earth?
2. Are there any new ideas concerning the origin of life on Earth?
3. What are we learning about the origins of humanity?
4. What is the greenhouse effect? Is global warming real? What do you think will be the consequences of increased levels of carbon dioxide in your area?
5. How are biofuels produced? Do they represent a real alternative to fossil-based fuels?
6. What is the most recent research telling us about the impact of global warming on extinction rates?
7. What kinds of population control policies are being instituted or enforced worldwide? Are they moral? Are they justified?
8. What’s going on with the frogs? Do we need to worry?
9. What is bioengineering? Should we work toward developing genetically modified organisms?
10.How has our knowledge of DNA improved the study of criminal forensics?
11.Stem cell research offers real potential for the treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s. Is stem cell research ethical? Should an administration be able to limit the availability of embryonic stem cells? What about the production of cloned embryos for the purpose of stem cell collection?
12.Is there a place for nanotechnology in medicine?

The criteria for the report are as follows.
1. The paper must be a minimum of three pages (excluding tables, figures, bibliography, etc.). The text component of the paper should not exceed five pages. Do not select a topic that is too broad to cover in three pages.
2. No fewer than five references are to be cited.
3. Line spacing must be double.
4. Font size must not exceed 12 point and must be Courier, Arial (or equivalent), Verdana, or Times New Roman; Arial is preferred.
A separate title page is not required. But at the top of the first page, at the left margin, provide your name, course name (SCI214), session (i.e., JAN16), instructor’s name, and date submitted.
The document must be in proper format, contain proper punctuation and good grammar, and be error free. The document must be prepared using the American Psychological Association (APA) writing format. Be sure that your bibliography is formatted correctly. Failure to cite a source is considered plagiarism*; such a report will receive a score of 0.
All information derived from sources, other than the author’s own words (i.e., facts, statistics, quotes, etc.), must be properly referenced within the body of the document using APA rules and guidelines.
The document must include a bibliography that includes all references used within the document, which must be properly cited using APA rules. Tables, figures, or photos are not required but may be viewed positively. Any tables, figures, or photos must be properly formatted and embedded within the document, with source citations provided in the text. Any ancillary files will be ignored.
