Many states have the equivalent of the Missouri Show-Me Standards, a set of guidelines that provide the basic structure of what children should know and be able to do during the K-12 years. If you are not a Missouri resident, check the internet for your state’s government home page to see if it does and print it out. If not, go to Missouri’s site, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for theirs and use it for the assignment. There are really three parts to this assignment; be sure to do each. 1) Using either the Missouri Show Me Standards or the state standards you have selected, analyze the goals in terms of progressive vs. traditional philosophical implications. What is the predominant approach? Examples of the other? Support your conclusion with specific examples and clear, accurate descriptions of the characteristics of the two philosophical positions. 2) Select two reform movements and identify which orientation (traditional or progressive) best describes each and why. 3) Using all that you have read so far, look at dates of the reform movements and see if you can make at least two connections between the dates and the political and social events of the times. Assignment should be supported with specific references to the textbook and should be 1 ½ to 2 pages in length.
