Leading and Facilitating Change

About 300 -350 words per person (total 1,500 – 2,100 words)

Introduction

The two possible strategies to lead the company

The two strategies proposed to Gene One are innovation and imitation.

Strategy 1 – Innovation

Applying innovation to Gene One, it encourages employees to innovate meaningful and unique technology to benefit the company. Innovative firms motivate employees to take risk by using competitive pay and benefits. Applying innovation encourages Gene One members to practice “well-developed communication channels, policies for enhancing long-term commitment, and clear channels of authority all make it easier to make rapid changes smoothly” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 504).

How could the strategy be implemented

“Innovation can be incremental, which features a new process or way of doing business, or it can be transformative, which debuts an entirely new way to deliver value” (Innovationcoach, 2013). After setting the organizational goal, which is to produce varieties to better people’s lives, innovation can be implemented to Gene One through a New Product Development (NPD) process.

Following the NPD process suggested in Innovationcoach (2013), first, team members can set specific criteria so poor projects can be dropped. In this case, since Gene One has a diverse of intelligent team members, a meeting can be held to vote on the best path to reach the organizational goal. Second, it is important to have risk prevention, team members “may want to develop multiple versions of the road map scaled to suit different types and risk levels of projects” (Innovationcoach, 2013). During the company meeting, the leadership team has evaluated ten options, where Don, the CEO of Gene One constantly provides his team with inspiration, Chief Technology Officer, Teri’s technological talent and ability is responsible for new technology ideas, where the CFO, Michelle could focus on options both strategically and financially. The final step of NPD process is to examine the last innovation process. It helps the company to “gain some valuable key learnings, (and) foster a culture of continuous improvement in the innovation process” (Innovationcoach, 2013).

How will the strategy lead to the desired outcome

Since there is a growing interest in biotechnology in the market, the company will need to have new development to reach the desired outcome, which is to show Wall Street that Gene One has the leadership and organizational capabilities to succeed as a public entity, and to “create new and better produce varieties that can change the lives of people around the world”. Innovation without boundary will encourage the technology department, specifically Teri Robertson’s team, to conduct breakthrough research on technology discovery and development.
