 Using the background readings or other scholarly sources that you find, identify what you believe to be the most critical ethical issue facing educational leaders today. Identify whether this issue pertains to PK-12 or higher education. You should explore all facets of the issue that an educational leader would need to know and offer possible practical next steps if you were to handle this issue as a leader in an educational institution. Case Assignment

Use the readings in Module 1 and any other relevant sources (e.g., cases, laws, articles) to write a 3- to 4-page paper that responds to the following question: How does the U.S. legal system affect education? Your paper should include a discussion of the role that the courts and legislatures play in resolving educational law issues.

Assignment Expectations

Your work should demonstrate the following:

• At least 3-4 pages, not counting the title page and references.
• A clear introduction that orients a reader to the essay main content and the main points discussed.
• A well-developed, well-balanced essay body that develops each point in its own paragraph.
• A concise conclusion that summarizes the whole essay.
• Include at least three references. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and also listed at the end of the assignment in the References section. Follow the APA Style® format, see www.apa.org.
• At least one in-text citation for each reference.
• General format/mechanics.
• A reference page which follows APA requirements.
• Organized in a clear and coherent manner.
• Double spaced with font size of 12.

Legal information can sometimes be daunting for those without a legal background, yet it is critical that educational leaders understand the basics about laws and liability to protect themselves and their institutions. It is also critical that educational leaders are able to communicate pertinent legal information to stakeholders in a manner that is easy to understand (i.e., not using legalese). You will be selecting an educational institution (either PK-12 or higher education) and creating a PowerPoint that you will build on during each Module. Your audience for this presentation should be stakeholders at that institution (e.g., staff, students, parents—specify who your audience is in the body of your presentation) who need to be made aware of the laws, cases, and policies related to each Module’s topic. You should utilize the background readings as well as your institution’s web site (or other documents you have access to) to complete this assignment. It might be helpful to read the description of all SLP assignments before you begin the Module 1 SLP.

For Module 1, create the following PowerPoint slides (for a total of 10 slides):

• 1 title slide (include name of educational institution)
• 1 objectives slide (write 2-4 objectives for the presentation; this is likely where you will specify who your audience is)
• 2 background information slides (include basic information, like your institution’s mission statement, population served, and brief history)
• 2 slides with introductory information about the U.S. legal system (court system, state and federal legislation, etc.)
• 2 slides about the intersection of law and education in the United States (this information should be general, as you will delve into specific topics in later modules)
• 1 slide about ethical issues facing today’s educational institutions
• 1 reference slide (list your sources in APA format)

SLP Assignment Expectations

All slides except the title slide and reference slide(s) should utilize the notes section to elaborate on the points made on each slide. In order to be visible and clear for your audience, you should limit the amount of text on each slide, and you should utilize the notes section to add more detail (think of the notes as the part you would speak aloud if actually delivering the presentation). Accurate spelling and grammar is expected. Use proper APA formatting for in-text citations and your references slide(s).
