Design Project

Objective:

The objective of this assignment is to develop an understanding and appreciation for the complexity of the engineering design process, and to experience the thinking processes required by performing a small design project. This is a group project, work in groups of 2-4 students.

Potential projects:

• Develop a device to measure the pressure as a function of depth in water.
• Develop a device to measure temperature
• Develop a device to measure time.
• Develop a device to measure weight.
• To do a different project, you must get instructor approval.

To get full credit, all projects listed above must not use any store bought parts or electronic parts that perform the measurement you are interested in.

The design process that you will formally follow for the purposes of this project is listed below. If you feel the order doesn’t match what your group thinks is best, you can adjust accordingly.

For this project, you will be focusing on #’s 1-8.

What needs to be turned in:

Your group needs to keep a project notebook to be turned in with your final report.  Only one copy of each for the entire group is needed.  

Project Notebook (20 pts):

• I am grading you on how you followed the design process outlined above, this notebook is how I will determine that.  Take notes appropriately.
• One way to take care of the project notebook is to designate 1 person to be the official note taker at each team meeting, rotating this role, and keep all the notes together.
• Another way to take care of this: if someone is a great note taker, they can volunteer to take all the notes. At the group’s discretion this person might not be required to do any of the final write up, or a reduced amount.
• The project notebook will constitute 50% of the total project grade, so don’t take it lightly. This is where you make note of all the items listed in the table above.
• It is common practice in engineering to have a notetaker for meetings, and to keep record of important proceedings. This is to prepare you for that.
• Before turning the notebook in, review your notebook and add additional notes for clarification. If I can’t understand what you meant, I can’t give you the best grade possible.  If I don’t see you doing a particular step based on your notebook, I will deduct points.

Final Report (20 pts):

• A suggested format is available in your textbook, pg 100.
• Be sure to include the test results of all the models you tested, why the final model is the one being chosen, and why the others are not being chosen
• To really sell your idea, think about why someone would want to use this product and specify why the final choice meets those criteria.  
• Make your final report easy to follow, and professional looking. If your report isn’t organized well, it isn’t taken seriously by readers, and might not move on in the approval process.
