Leadership Theory Paper

Throughout this degree program, you have been exposed to many great leaders in nursing and health care. Reflect on the leadership demonstrated by individuals such as Dr. Margaret McClure, Dr. Diane Mancino, Dr. Karen Drenkard, Ms. Joan Marren, Dr. Leslie Mancuso, Maria Manna, and Dr. Kenneth Rempher. Great leaders share common characteristics. As you have heard in this week’s media presentation, leadership skills can be learned and developed. The first step in developing leadership skills is increasing your self-awareness of your leadership qualities and abilities. This can help you evolve and develop your leadership abilities. In order to be an effective leader, you must find a style, or styles, that meet both your needs and those of the institution.

Complete at least one of the following assessment inventories.

·         Gallup Strength Finders

·         Myers-Briggs

·         DiSC

Review your assessment results, and determine your leadership style, strengths, and growing edges. Consider how your leadership strengths are demonstrated in your nursing practice.

Identify an individual in your professional and/or work environment whom you consider to be an effective leader and discuss the characteristics you see in this individual that supports your selection of him/her as an effective leader.  Include in the discussion any strengths or characteristics you have in common with the leader you select. Write a 2–3 page paper of the selected leader’s leadership style and specific leadership characteristics demonstrated. Include in your summary any strengths or characteristics you have in common with the leader you selected. Also include how your identified strengths demonstrate mastery of ANA’s Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice, Standards of Professional Performance, Standard 12: Leadership as evidenced in your nursing practice.

For this Application Assignment, write a 2- to 3-page paper discussing your leadership assessment results and applying them to your nursing practice.  Identify an individual whom you consider to be an effective leader and discuss the specific characteristics you see in this individual that supports your selection of him/her as an effective leader. Using your leadership assessment results as a guideline, include in your summary any strengths or characteristics you have in common with the leader you selected. Also, include how your identified strengths demonstrate mastery of ANA’s Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice, Standards of Professional Performance, Standard 12: Leadership as evidenced in your nursing practice. Use the following guidelines, evaluation criteria, and the headings below for each section. Use a minimum of three references from the professional nursing literature in the assigned course readings and other references in the Walden Library. If they are relevant, you may use one or two professional websites in addition to the literature references.

• Overview—20 points

  Begin this paper with a brief paragraph that provides an overview of the assignment and its purpose. There is no separate heading for this paragraph; the heading for this paragraph is the same as the title of the paper. This paragraph will be about 2–3 sentences. The last sentence in this paragraph is a sentence that begins “The purpose of this paper is to . . .”

• Assessment Inventory—30 points

In order to be an effective leader, you must find a style, or styles, that meet both your needs and those of the institution. Complete one of the following assessment inventories. This section will be 2–3 paragraphs.

• Gallup Strength Finders
• Myers-Briggs
• DiSC

Discuss the results and indicate if you agree with them and how they will enhance your nursing practice.

• Leadership Analysis—40 points

Identify an individual in your professional and/or work environment whom you consider to be an effective leader and discuss the characteristic you see in the individual that supports your selection of him/her as an effective leader.  Include in the discussion any strengths or characteristics you have in common with the leader you selected. Also include how your identified strengths demonstrate mastery of ANA’s Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice, Standards of Professional Performance, Standard 12: Leadership as evidenced in your nursing practice. This section will be 2–3 paragraphs.

• Summary—10 points

  End the paper with a 1-paragraph summary of the main points of the paper.

Format/Style

Proofread the paper as described in the tips for success in this course and correct any typos, grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, or APA format errors before submitting your paper in the Dropbox. Up to 40 points can be deducted from the grade for this assignment for these types of errors, or for not using at least the minimum number of required references.

Total points for assignment = 100 points
