The client knows that a corporation can deduct 100% of the food for employees if it is for a mentoring event. So, every Friday there are free coffee and doughnuts for employees while a member of management is there to make a few statements about professional development. This way the company can claim the 100% deduction for their Friday morning coffee and donuts (Spilker & Ayers, 2021).            I do not think that this is ethical of the business considering the main point of giving a 100% tax deduction for food is an incentive for businesses to mentor their employees more. This was put into effect so that these employees would get to hear from someone higher up in the company and perhaps ask some questions. This is both a waste of time for the employees and the higher-ups because no one is gaining anything from this interaction other than a tax deduction on donuts and coffee. The tax director is attempting to claim an extra benefit without really supplying what is needed for it. I think they are probably doing just enough to satisfy the requirement to claim that 100% deduction, but a company should not be striving for the bare minimum. The company should be striving to improve their employee’s abilities so that each employee is more useful and helpful in the workplace. Employees should constantly be learning and improving because chances are, they will not hold the same position for their entire career. Eventually, some employees will get promoted and it is better that they have talked to someone with experience rather than going into a new job with nothing. Without that extra mentoring, all the company is really doing is lowering their taxes slightly through doughnuts and coffee. There is no value added, our taxes are lowered but a member of management wastes time doing nothing. The Bible says in Romans 13:7 “Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, the respect; if honor, then honor (NIV). So, if a corporation is not really giving the service, they said they are giving for a tax deduction, then they are not really paying the taxes they owe. Also, if the corporation is taking this deduction, they owe a real mentoring session to their employees every Friday, not just a manager with a few encouraging statements. They are both not paying what they should be paying, and they are not giving what should be given. As Christians, it is okay to take deductions as long as we satisfy the requirements for those deductions. If we are claiming deductions, we are still paying what we owe, those deductions were written into the tax code for a reason. Once we start lying to claim deductions is when we start to disobey God’s word.ReferencesNew International Version Bible. (2011). Zondervan. (Original work published 1978)Spilker, B. C., & Ayers, B.
