Rebuttal Paper

For this assignment, I would like you to find an article from the New York Times that you disagree with, either in tone or in substance. Write a rebuttal in which you refute part or all of the article’s argument and then offer a counterargument that explains a better way to address the issue. You don’t need to completely refute the article. In other words, you could concede that the author has some good points. Your aim is to use weaknesses in the author’s argument as a springboard to presenting your own views. You might first choose a topic that interests you and then find an article that you disagree with. In this assignment, your objectives are to demonstrate that you can— • Choose and define an interesting topic. • Counter an argument made by another person. • Use an argumentative main point (thesis statement) that focuses and directs an argument. • Craft effective paragraphs that use clear topic sentences. • Use subject alignment and given-new strategies to improve the flow of your sentences in a paragraph. • Write in an engaging style that is persuasive but not off-putting to your readers.
