If searching for justice during a trial, there must be an understanding of rules and limitations for a juror’s access to information. There are limitations placed on jurors media exposure during deliberations because any information obtained outside of evidence or testimony presented in court, can lead to a biased opinion of the defendant. This violates juror’s rules and instructions given by the judge and also violates the defendants 6th Amendment right to a fair trial and an impartial jury. (www.encyclopedia.com). There is a question if guilt or innocence should only use information gathered in compliance with the Constitution and approved by the judge. Any information gathered and shared in court should be the only evidence and information used to determine a verdict in a case. It is required to be within Constitutional limits, the law, and the rules established by the judge, which are legal principles based on the law. (D.W. Neubauer & H.D. Fradella, 2017). If there are no rules or laws to keep order in a court of law, there could be chaos and support would diminish for the criminal justice system. Defendants on trial could suffer if a jurors opinion of them is biased by any outside media or influence, Defendants could be more likely found guilty, and their Constitutional rights would be violated. (D.W. Neubauer & H.D. Fradella, 2017). Exceptions should still be in the hands of the judge, though some jurors try to make up their own rules of what evidence is useful to decide guilt. Judges follow a strict code of conduct and ethics, the jury is asked to adhere in the same respect. They are read the instructions and given the basis of law to follow upon returning a guilty or innocent verdict. Jurors cannot make up their own rules, they cannot make assumptions or go on information discovered outside the courtroom, and they deliberate according to the law based on criminal procedure.
