Generalization and replacement behaviors are such important aspects in school for students to thrive and be successful. Mckenna, Flower, Falcomata, and Adamson (2016) describe that there is proven effectiveness with replacement behaviors. They must be able to apply behaviors they have learned in one setting and apply it somewhere else. A replacement behavior that could be taught to a student as part of a behavior intervention plan would be raising his or hand when they want to speak in class. Some students have such a problem of blurting out whatever is on their mind. They have not learned to control their tongue and think before they speak. The Bible definitely talks about controlling the tongue and being slow to speak in James 1:19. One way to accomplish this, again, is to replace the behavior with telling them to raise their to speak. You can tell them that if they raise their hand, they will be called on to say what is on their mind. Teaching students to raise their hand is such a simple and yet highly impactful and transforming lesson to learn because it not only will help the student out in the long run in terms of school success but will also help out other students who will be able to pay more attention to the teacher as they won’t be distracted as much by the student blurting out whatever is on his or her mind. The goal would be to teach them to do this not only in my classroom, but in every classroom that the student participates in.
A type of generalization that would help students apply this behavior to another environment is known as response generalization. This would look like a student applying this learned behavior to all environments where raising his or her hand is expected when desiring to talk. Response generalization will greatly help this student develop both academically and certainly behaviorally.
A tactic to use to help promote this generalization would be to enforce the behavior and encourage them when they apply it! Encouragement is so key when it comes to students learning a new behavior that they most likely don’t want to learn. Rewards for applying the behavior would also be a great tactic in encouraging the students! Furthermore, behavior instruction for about 10 minutes about 3 days week could be very helpful (Mckenna, Flower, Falcomata, & Adamson, 2017).
