Guided Response: Compare and contrast the significance of the concept you chose with your peers.
PEER 1
Family is very important to me.  That is one of the reasons why I think building home/school relationships is an important part of a child’s academic success and an important concept when it comes to culture diversity in early childhood education. I believe the education of a young child is a partnership. I also think that to fully understand a child, means having the ability to understand their culture.  Young children may not always be able to express their views or provide information on their culture, their family however, is a great source of information.

PEER 2
What I found to be one of the most significant comments in the video is that teachers have to be culturally competent and the importance of understanding and promoting culture in the classroom. On my lesson plan each week I have to provide two may that I will be promoting cultural in my class. I have discussed a Native American custom called the “Talking Stick” with my children, and we count in Spanish every day, these are two of the ways I have taught cultural in my classroom since August.

PEER 3
The most essential concept mentioned in the video is that teachers should be culturally competent. As educators, having the ability to successfully interact with students and families of different cultures, in and out of the classroom environment is vital for the partnership of all involved. Teachers must display no biases, be respectful of all cultures and traditions, for students and their families. “Culture consist of the social practices, beliefs, values, and behaviors that intentionally-and unintentionally-shape human communications, interactions, and preferences” (Curenton, & Iruka, 2013).
