Ethical considerations and concerns presented in the research of this article was to ensure that the methods used in research linked to the students IEP and to the standards. When a child has an IEP it ensures that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services. The Belmont report speaks of autonomy, respect for person and conformed consent. The children in our classrooms are individuals and instruction should meet their needs. When a child has an IEP it is the special education teachers job to assist the classroom teacher and ensure that the classroom adheres to the IEP’s requirements. The IEP contains very clear goals and modifications for each student.

The statistics on bullying, suicide and school violence are disturbing. Studies show that the three are unfortunately linked, and one often leads to the latter. In many school districts, the priority is test scores, and the treatment and well-being of our students are placed on the back burner. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in over 4500 deaths per year (Mintz, 2012). A question to consider is, should we utilize time that is allocated for learning, as time to educate students on the importance of morals, ethics, and values, and more specifically, deterring them from partaking in harmful behavior, such as bullying, and enlightening them on the potential consequences of their actions.
