Your first journal assignment consists of four entries. Each entry should be at least 200 words and will consist of two parts: Part A will be a summary of one of the articles or chapters assigned for reading. Part B will consist of your critical response to the reading.
Summaries must be in your own words and based on your reading. Not all of these chapters are “easy reads,” so be sure to allow plenty of time to read and digest the material before attempting your journal entry. This is not an assignment to put off until the last moment. Ideally, you should be writing one entry each week.
Responses can be wide ranging and can include personal experiences, other articles or books you may have read, or information you have encountered on the Internet.
Your goal should be for each entry to reflect your thoughtful response to the material under consideration. There is no one “right” way to respond, but the more you think about the topic or subject matter and reflect your thinking in the journal entry, the more your critical thinking and writing skills will improve. My belief is that the directed response journal is a particularly good place to wrestle with new ideas or concepts that are difficult or challenging.
You can put all four entries on a single document, which can be submitted by clicking on the assignment title, above. You can label the entries 1A, 1B; 2A, 2B, etc.
