Assignment 1: The New Nature of Conflict

In this module, you learned about many aspects of and the nature of conflict. You learned about how power influences communications and these communications may stimulate or mitigate conflict. Conflict is not just confined to a difference between two people but on the global scale can be conflict between organizations, nations, employees who are employed in the same organization but who live in different countries with different cultures, etc. You learned from where conflict manifests such as intrapersonally vs. interpersonally and you read about how leader power influences conflict. You gained insight into the reasons people engage in conflict—to persuade others, regulate relationships, experience catharsis, and help clarify issues. You read about and considered five types of conflict styles or strategies: competitive, collaborative, compromising, accommodating, and avoidance. In addition, you examined a competence approach to communication during conflict. A competence approach stresses a strategic method to conflict focusing on appropriateness and effectiveness.

Tasks:

Analyze whether the conflict style selected for managing a conflict should depend upon individual preferences and styles or upon strategic goals.

• Consider this from both domestic and international business perspectives. Provide a well-developed argument and an example (if possible) supporting your position. In your answer, state at least two advantages and disadvantages of each approach (individual preferences and styles or strategic goals). Provide examples of these advantages and disadvantages based on the many components discussed in this module’s assigned readings and lectures. Support your work with relevant research through citations.
