It also includes the Student’s Personal Information (Rank, Name, Duty Position, State, Class Number, Date of submission and the Classification of the paper). b) Table of Contents: The Table of contents lists the items (by section) contained in your paper along with their corresponding page number. c) Abstract: The purpose of the Abstract is to provide a short synopsis of the battle being discussed. On the first line of the abstract page, center the word “Abstract” (no bold, formatting, italics, underlining, or quotation marks). Your abstract should be a single paragraph double-spaced. Your abstract should be between 150 and 250 words. d) Introduction: The introduction is simply a general overview of your selected operation, battle or engagement. First, outline the disposition of forces. Then, explain in chronological order what actually happened (beginning with the initial act of the aggressor, followed by the response of the defendant). Subsequently, outline the major phases, actions and eventual outcome of the battle. This section ends with the status and disposition of forces at the end of the engagement. h) Significance: This section should address the tactical (short term) and strategic (long term) significance of this battle as it relates to the larger operation, campaign or war. The significance (both short term and long term) should be clear, concise and factual (with as little subjectivity as possible). i) Analysis: The analysis should emphasize the key variables that contributed both to victory and defeat. The analysis should focus on the principles of war (including the principles of the offense or defense where appropriate), and the elements of combat power that you feel directly influenced the outcome. This section should also include any additional significant aspects of the battle that have affected warfighting in subsequent years (technology, strategy, policy, doctrine, etc). j) Conclusion: The conclusion should summarize the context, outcome and impact of the battle, and include your personal Observations; what you believe led to the operational and tactical level successes and failures based on your research. Finally, your paper should conclude with one to five critical Insights and Lessons Learned that can be applied to warfighting in the future, or that can be integrated into training at the Company level and below to improve the overall performance of maneuver forces to fight, survive and win in future conflicts. k) Maps, Diagrams, Charts or Pictures: This section includes any additional items that you feel will add value to the narrative or better explain certain aspects of the paper.
