Your topic will need to be approved by the professor at the time of your selection.
Structure
In the first paragraph, the introduction, you must include:

  • The name of the art movement,

  • The years it was active,

  • What region(s) on the globe did is exist

  • Describe its typical art form (sculpture, architecture, paintings, photographs… etc)

  • A description of the characteristics.

  • Artists of notoriety.

  • Thesis statement – usually the last line or so of your first paragraph.

From that point forward, you should map out a timeline, laying out the beginning to the end of the movement, historical factors in the environment that fostered its growth (if any), highlight and detail artists and identify several key pieces of art (including a brief formal analysis and critical responses) from the time peroid. And so on…

Your paper should not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through the history of the movement with regard to specific pieces and artists (ex: one paragraph may deal with motifs, another with a description of aesthetics, another with the public reception). Be sure to include a paragraph or two describing a personal reaction to the art period via artists, themes, specific pieces. Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph) you should end your paper with a restatement of your thesis.

Please use descriptive language and adjectives to describe the work. Do not try to add in fluffy adjectives.

Begin with a general description of the facts, and then move on to the more specific details and finally, opinions and reactions.

The thesis statement is an important element. It sets the tone for the entire paper, and sets it apart from being merely a paper that is a regurgitation of wikipedia articles.
