What do you aim to find out in doing this research? 

It is essential that you develop this carefully. This evidence will lead to the thesis statement, the central argument of the entire paper.  

Write a paper that examines how cultural encounters influenced architectural traditions and sometimes resulted in hybrid architecture. This can be about architecture anywhere in the world as long as it is prior to 1700. Students are encouraged to address at least one of Maass’s criticisms and examine architecture outside of Europe and North America. For example: 

 Justinian’s Byzantine church of Aya Sophia was the model for later Ottoman architecture. 

 Islamic architecture in India was influenced by earlier building traditions of Hindu craftsmen. 

Adobe missions in the American Southwest result from radical transformations of Spanish church architecture by Pueblo builders and their materials and methods of construction. 

Focus! For a short paper like this, focus on one or two buildings. Use specific evidence from one or two buildings to discuss larger issues.
