Basic requirements:

• Your paper must be formatted in either APA or MLA style.

• Each paper must be a minimum of four pages (1,000 words) in length (it can be longer, however). Use Times New Roman font, size 12, with normal margins and double spacing.

• Each paper must also have a properly formatted cover page and reference page (which do NOT count toward the page minimum).

• All papers must reference at least four high-quality sources (i.e. scholarly journal articles, books from academic presses, documents from long-established professional and non-profit organizations, etc.), with Hutter’s textbook being one of the four selections.

• Structure your paper as a formal academic research paper (i.e. begin with an introductory paragraph which contains a strong thesis, introduce each new topic in the paragraphs which follow and support each topic with evidence, and then clearly conclude your arguments in a final paragraph).

The concept of the “American Dream” suggests that every person living the United States has an equal opportunity to “success” through their initiative and hard work. Using the concepts and readings from the first half of the course, how do you believe that urban planning can contribute to a built environment which reflects the aspirations of the American Dream?

Some issues that can addressed in your paper:

• What amenities and facilities are important to include?
• What considerations need to be attended to as the suburbs grow? (should suburbs even be encouraged? are they inevitable?)
• How should urban renewal be approached?
• How does technology factor into your vision? How does industry?
• Finally, would you say that your conceptualization of urban planning has more in common with the Chicago or L.A. School of Thought? Explain your stance.
